John S. Goleneski, 77, of Avoca, passed away quietly Monday afternoon at Allied Services Hospice, Scranton. He was married to the former Janet Ackley since April 23rd 2010.

Born on August 26, 1948, in Old Forge, he was the son of the late Stanley “Gus” and Viola DeSimone Goleneski. John was a graduate of Old Forge High School’s Class of 1966. He attended Lackawanna Junior College and Bloomsburg University. Prior to retirement, he was employed at Golden Technologies, Old Forge, as the company’s controller.

John was an avid sports fan. He followed Old Forge High School football for many years, Penn State football through the good and not so good years, and was a Phillies baseball fan forever. He greatly enjoyed talking about sports with anyone who would lend an ear. John will be deeply missed by family and friends.

In addition to his wife, Janet, John is survived by two stepdaughters, Heather Segal and Amy Parras, a stepson, Alan Segal, and grandchildren; Elijah, Penelope, Nadia, Julian, Madison, a brother, Joe Goleneski and his wife Leslie, a niece, Olivia and husband Rob, a great-niece, Alice May, numerous cousins; Ron Golenski, Andy Brezak, Mary Ercolani and Naomi Ballard, Mary Ann Arnold, Josephine Kowalski, Leonard Trotta, Ambrose and Albert DeSimone.

To honor John, a Blessing Service will be held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Louis V. Ciuccio Funeral Home, 145 Moosic Road, Old Forge. Interment will follow at Holy Rosary Cemetery, Duryea.

Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects to John at the funeral home on Monday evening from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.
